If you’re struggling to make yourself heard in the office, shouting above the constant drone of the air conditioner, or if you’re lying in bed awake at night as your AC unit whirrs and clunks, then you might be concerned that you’ve purchased the wrong air conditioning system.

Whilst it’s true that some AC units are going to be louder than others, they shouldn’t be so noisy that they’re having a noticeable negative impact.

In fact, loud air conditioning units are usually due to:

Poor maintenance

If your air conditioning unit isn’t regularly maintained then it’s possible that one of the AC fan blades has worked itself loose and will need to be tightened. If this is the case, the noise that you hear might include a slight rattling sound. A screw could cause a similar sound if it’s worked itself loose over time, due to the vibration of the AC unit.

If the sound is more a grinding or squeaking then it’s possible that your air conditioning motor needs to be oiled or lubricated.

Any air conditioning unit can suffer from a build-up of dust and debris which will need to be removed. This is particularly true of AC units in offices and industrial buildings where there are a lot of things happening at once. Regular cleaning is essential, and best done by a professional.

Air conditioning units are not invincible. Damage can happen for any number of reasons. One of the most common issues is a twig or similar piece of debris becoming lodged in the fan blade, causing permanent damage such as the bending of a blade. This isn’t always as a result of poor maintenance, as a twig or stick could fall into your AC unit at any time, but you can reduce the risk by regularly checking for anything that shouldn’t be there.
